A lot of species of whales breach. But the most well known for this weird behaviour is humpback whale. They can jump out of the water for over 12 meters, they do it by using theirs 5 meters long muscle called peduncle which is connecting theirs really strong tail with the rest of the body.
For decades, the phenomenon of humpback whales breaching has captivated the attention of scientists to this day we cannot be one hundred percent sure that we know the reason behind theirs amazing habit. But many researchers have given us many hypothesis that sound like that they are close to truth.
1. To mark their their territory. By creating big splashes whales can give a massage to others that the area is occupied.
2. To communicate with others whales. Sound travels a lot further under whater, so a big splash created by a humpback can alert other whales in a very long distance.
3. To get rid of parasites. With the force that whales are leaving the water, the parasites might get removed from the skin of a whale. It helps them to maintain good health.
