Biodiversity of Baltic Sea

The Baltic Sea is home to diverse range of species including birds, mammals, fish, crustaceans, mollusks, algae and seagrass. The unique salinity gradient and high variability in habitat types of the Baltic Sea have resulted in a greater variety of plants and animals than might be expected under such conditions. However, many species are still under threat due to eutrophication, climate change, and various human pressures. Many organisations and countries are working to protect this worthy environment. Deep-sea Anglerfish

Deep-sea anglerfish is considered to be one of the ugliest fish in the world. It looks like that because it has adapted to the conditions it is living in.  Where do anglerfish live? They inhabit lightless and lonely bottoms of Europe’s seas. Where they are exposed to extreme pressure. What is that thing on its head? That’s a piece of dorsal fin that is worn only by females, it is just above its head and waits for a prey just like a fishing rod. It is tipped with luminous flesh which attracts other fishes.  Stonefish is a small animal with a size of 40 cm. It lives near the coast of Indian and Pacific Ocean and here are some really intersting facts about this fish.     1.They are excellent in the art of blending in.          As theirs name says the look like a rock even if you are standing right above it, seeing it could be really hard. What is fascinating about coral reefs?  1. Corals can swim. When you Think of a collar, you probably imagine beautiful, colorful underwater organism that is attached to the ground. And you wouldn’t be wrong but in the early stage of growth they swim with ocean currents, looking for a good place to live. 2. Corals aren’t plants. Corals are really unique despite that they are permanently to the bottom of the ocean, they are animals. They are animals with plant-like cells. What makes them different from plants is that they do not produce food, they have to catch it. Every coral has mouth and stomach to process food. 3. The biggest threat to corals is climate change. Climate change causes the ocean’s water to warm up. Which isn’t good for corals. Too high temperature of water makes corals bleach and if temperature doesn’t drop the coral dies.
