What is fascinating about coral reefs?
1. Corals can swim.
When you Think of a collar, you probably imagine beautiful, colorful underwater organism that is attached to the ground. And you wouldn’t be wrong but in the early stage of growth they swim with ocean currents, looking for a good place to live.
2. Corals aren’t plants.
Corals are really unique despite that they are permanently to the bottom of the ocean, they are animals. They are animals with plant-like cells. What makes them different from plants is that they do not produce food, they have to catch it. Every coral has mouth and stomach to process food.
3. The biggest threat to corals is climate change.
Climate change causes the ocean’s water to warm up. Which isn’t good for corals. Too high temperature of water makes corals bleach and if temperature doesn’t drop the coral dies.

There are also plants that catch food, aren't there? E.g. Venus flytrap. What makes them plants rather than animals? Or do they belong to the same family as corals?
OdpowiedzUsuńVenus flytrap is plant because it does photosynthesis so it produces food for itself.
